Motto for Life

It’s scary how impressionable children are.  You parents already know that.  Liliana copies everything we do, and to see it mirrored back at us in such a way is hilarious if it’s good and disquieting if it’s not.

I have always thought Micah 6:8 (Micah is a book in the Bible, for those of you who might not know) epitomizes what I want my life to look like, if someone were to take a spiritual snapshot of it.  And I want it “out there,” so that I’m held accountable.  Hence, the quote on our dining room wall (if you’re thinking, “Wow, can she paint!” I’m here to tell you that although I would like to take credit, it was a simple and fast order from Wise Decor).  I simply stuck the letters on the wall.

The quote reads: “Do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with your God.”  It covers all the bases–social justice, kindness to others and the environment, maintaining a sense of knowing that at any moment you are susceptible to bad behavior, and continually seeking the God who made you.

If I were to choose only one word to aspire to it would be “kindness.”

Of course, having it on my wall doesn’t mean I’m living it, but it serves as a daily reminder of why I think I’m here on this green (and suffering) earth.  I want Liliana to know, too, what I’m trying to do, and I also want to be able to say to her, “You know, I failed miserably in that regard.  Can you forgive your dear old mom?” and begin again.

It’s like my newly posted quote on the main blog page: “One should count each day a separate life.” –Lucius Annaeus Seneca, philosopher (BCE 3-65 CE).  You take each day as a gift and do the best you can.
