Father’s Day

It’s Dan’s first Father’s Day.  We are celebrating.

It’s funny, though.  We used to hate Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, because it was as though in order to be human you had to be a parent (at least at our age).  We actually had someone ask us once, “Do you have children?” to which we said, “No,” and to which he exclaimed, “Why not?”  What do you say to that?

So, I’m here to tell you that whether or not you’re a father today, it doesn’t matter.  Everyone has a particular role in this world, and if kids aren’t a part of that, then that’s quite all right.  You will shine in other ways.  Truth be told, I think some parents wish they had listened to that inner voice that said, “Maybe kids aren’t for you.”  I’m not guessing.  I know that for a fact.  I’ve had parents tell me such–in confidence, of course.

The song for this Sunday morning is for those of you who might be a little down, slightly discouraged, maybe a tad bit exhausted.  I once heard an interview with a man who was in prison without parole say, “I’ve learned that if I wait, it’ll all pass over eventually.”  So true.

Here are the lyrics, in case you can’t understand all the words.  The song is my gift to you today.

Stitch in your knitted brow
and you don’t know how
you’re gonna get it out
crushed under heavy chest
trying to catch your breath
but it always beats you by a step, all right now

making the best of it
playing the hand you get
you’re not alone in this

there’s hope for the hopeless
there’s hope for the hopeless
there’s hope

cold in a summer breeze
yeah, you’re shivering
on your bended knee
still, when you’re heart is sore
and the heavens pour
like a willow bending with the storm, you’ll make it

running against the wind
playing the cards you get
something is bound to give

there’s hope for the hopeless
there’s hope for the hopeless
there’s hope
there’s hope
there’s hope

there’s hope.
