Gray Works Magic

We kids (there were seven of us!) entered lots of art contests growing up.  I won a 12-speed bike in an Easter coloring contest sponsored by our local hardware store.  My brother Matt won some money…and a party up in the penthouse of the Science Museum of Minnesota (at the old location) for his colored pencil drawing of dinosaurs.  [His feat was, by far, superior to mine.]

One thing I remember my mother telling us, in our many art endeavors, was that color was always brighter, a little more vibrant, with a dash of gray.  I’ve since heard photographers say that some of their best photographs are taken on cloudy days, not sunny days.

Since today is overcast, with a chance of rain, I got to thinking that it’s like this in our everyday lives, too.  A little gray, a little tough spot, makes things stand out–kindnesses, perhaps.  And thankfulness for things that are going all right.

I will go so far as to say it is during the greater tragedies (the really black times) that a spot of light (or hope) is a welcome relief.  It makes you grateful for the easy times…and humble that you could be so overcome with grief, or sorrow, or anger in such a short amount of time.

What’s the adage?  What doesn’t kill you, will make you stronger?  Yes, that’s it.  Your life needs the ups and the downs for you to come away with a beautiful life composition.

Are you in the gray today?  Look for the color, dahling, look for the color.
