Derek Webb’s Controversial Music Video

I don’t listen to Christian music much.  I don’t buy it, and I’m not familiar with many of the artists.  I want truth, and I don’t find much of it in Christian pop or rock.  Granted, there may be some artists out there who are stating it like it is, but I’m not aware of most of them.  I’m kinda an old-school hymn and chorus gal, myself, if I decide to listen.

And yet.  I was just alerted to this music video by Derek Webb, whom I’ve only vaguely heard of.

After listening, I bought his complete Stockholm Syndrome here.  This guy I can relate to.  This guy I want to hear more from.

The audacity to use s*** in a song!  The audacity to sing about homosexuality!

Instead of rehashing what people have already said about the video (most of them still not understanding what Webb is trying to do!), I’ll link a couple of opinions I liked.

The first is Chad Holtz’s Dancing on Saturday–his point being that although Webb’s issue is that we as Christians have bigger things to worry about than homosexuality, still…someone has to stand up and be an advocate for homosexual people, that they might be treated as justly as everyone.  Amen to that!  [Update on 10.18.10: Sadly, this link is dead.]

The second is Brian McLaren’s astute post here.  Be sure to look at his post on sexuality, too, here.

As those of you who have been following this blog know, I’m passionate about this topic, only because I see this as one area (among others) where we don’t act like Christians.

It makes me want to cry.

What do you think?
