Sound of Music

For a while now, I’ve been singing “Doe a deer, a female deer; ray, a drop of golden sun…” to Liliana, and she’s learned enough of the phrases to go around singing them.  She’s always run and danced and twirled while doing so, and I’ve never understood why, because she’s never seen the Sound of Music. So it must her own natural exuberance.

I’ve sung the sequence, too: “Do-mi-mi; mi-so-so; re-fa-fa; la-ti-ti….When you know the notes to sing; You can sing most A-NY-THING!”  She always watches my lips when I sing, and she asks for me to repeat it ad nauseam.

So, this afternoon, Dan found the DVD and popped it in.  We played the entire Do-Re-Mi sequence, and she was enthralled.  “Again!” she cried when it was done.  I said, “Later, okay?  I’m going to make dinner.”  Well, she came upstairs with me, and as we were cooking, she heard Julie Andrews voice again, belting it out in the movie theater where Papa was trying to find the other singing sequences.  Her eyes got SO big, and she scrambled down off her tower (something she uses while cooking with me), and raced downstairs.  There they both were (Papa and Liliana) until dinner.

I love it that she loves music this much.  I love it that she finds joy in it.

Let’s see.  More songs, more songs.  What are some of your favorites?
