Cloud Cult
A year ago, Dan and I went to a Cloud Cult concert at First Avenue in Minneapolis where they were doing selections from Feel Good Ghosts (Tea-Partying Through Tornadoes). They’re an unusual band, with violin and oboe in tow–a sort of “indie-rock chamber orchestra”–and the starts of their songs sound like movie overtures sometimes, heartbreakingly beautiful. I now own two of their CDs. They’re still touring for Feel Good Ghosts, so catch them while you can.
Craig Minowa, the group’s singer/songwriter and leader, lost his 2-year-old son in 2002, and his music is an attempt to crawl back into a hopeful and resilient world. His wife Connie (who went through the same devastation of loss) and another artist on the opposite side of the stage paint large canvases during the show, and members of the audience can submit their bids–if they so choose–as the group is playing/singing.
This is an event I’m recommending, even though you may not understand the meaning of all their words–but then again, isn’t it the same with poetry?
Close your eyes on this one, and let it wash over you.
Happy Monday!
