Incomplete list of 20 valuable lessons we want our children (and ourselves) to learn.

  1. Life’s not fair.
  2. Stand up for yourself and what you want.
  3. Think before you speak.
  4. Be honest.  It’s a lot less work than being dishonest.
  5. Be real.  Be authentic.
  6. Listen to what others have to say.
  7. Remember: not everyone is telling the truth.
  8. Be kind.
  9. You can walk away from someone.
  10. Apologize when you’re wrong.
  11. There will always be consequences, whether or not you’ve made a bad choice or a good choice.
  12. Don’t be afraid of a risk.  You might fail, but then you get to try again.
  13. Other people will always tell you how to live your life.  Listen to your heart.
  14. It’s okay to disagree.
  15. It’s okay to be mad or sad, but that’s no excuse to treat the people around you poorly.
  16. Work hard and always do your best.
  17. If you’ve promised something, do it.
  18. Rejection does not mean you’re a horrible person.
  19. Value and respect all people, no matter their station in life.  Treat others as you would want to be treated.
  20. You alone are responsible for the direction of your life.

I don’t think I ever sat down to write an entire list of what I would like to see in my child. I have thought of values and characteristics which are important in my own life and assumed if I was living those very values every day, they would be seen by others as being important. But I realize now there is much to be desired when left at that. If I fail at living them out, what chance does my child have of seeing their worth? Conversations are important. Identifying important, observable values in others and themselves…what opportunities to grow with a child! Thank you for your stimulus to think. One value I missed in your list was forgiveness. It has such depth and far reaching value in every relationship. It is an extension of God’s forgiveness toward us.

Oh yes, silly me. Forgiveness would be on that list, definitely. And that’s a hard one to emulate, too. So, count it as #21! Thanks for that, Mom!
